Key West International Airport recently sponsored Dagger Dive, a rehabilitative adaptive event aimed at bringing veteran families together over the course of a week in Key West.

Founded by Task Force Dagger Special Operations Foundation Rehabilitative Adaptive Events (RAE), Dagger Dive began in 2011. It is designed to help wounded, ill, and injured SOF (Special Operations Forces) service members and their families strengthen their bonds through the experience of diving and a series of connective events. Dagger Dive combines diving instruction, open-water dives, and various bonding activities, providing a holistic approach to healing and growth.

“Including this event in our community giveback program just made sense,” said Richard Strickland, Executive Director of Airports. “We sincerely hope all families were able to bond through one of the Florida Keys’ most popular activities and enjoyed their time in Key West.”

The airport’s community giveback program is aimed at fostering goodwill throughout Monroe County with funds derived from passenger facility charges accrued throughout the year.

“We thank these heroes and their fight for freedom. I stand by any initiative that assists them and their families in healing and moving forward together,” said Holly Raschein, Monroe County Mayor, who met and spent time with some of the divers.

Families stayed at the Opal Key Resort and Marina for a week of healing, bonding, and support. Prior to open water, participants mastered essential diving skills and safety procedures with the guidance of skilled instructors. The event culminated on June 23.
